Clowns Healing Haiti through Laughter
As the old saying goes, laughter is the best medicine. Clowns Sans Frontieres is bringing joy to children living in difficult conditions in Haiti.
There isn't much to laugh about in Haiti these days.
Since a massive earthquake rocked the Island nation January 12th, millions in this already poverty-stricken nation have found themselves facing misery.
And that is exactly why a group of clowns are in the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
Clowns Sans Frontieres, or Clowns without Borders, is a non-profit organization dedicated to putting smiles back on the faces of children around the world.
The troupe of performers visit children living amid the ravages of natural disasters, war zones, refugee camps and orphanages.
While other humanitarian organizations focus on providing shelter, medical care and food, singer Nicolas Coua explains that the performers work to give children and their families a chance to smile amid devastating conditions.
[Nicolas Coua, Clowns Sans Frontieres]:
"We are really concerned for the pain of the children, for their sadness. Children should never lose their smile. This also helps the parents that are also suffering."
Magician Louis Salle says that bringing laughter to a place of immense suffering brings as much reward to the artists as it does to the children.

"Wonderful! Is the most pure and energetic response you can get as an artist because is directed to the heart. They are laughing at all the jokes. They are loving all the magic tricks, singing with the musician. It's pure love, sharing. It's like we are like a little sun coming here to enlighten them but they are already enlightening us."
The group funds its work through the sale of clown noses, which they make.

Americans Detained in Haiti Appear in Court
Ten American missionaries have been detained in Haiti over charges of illegally attempting to take a group of children out of the country. The group will appear in court before a judge who will decide their fate.
A judge was set to decide on Thursday on whether to pursue a case against the ten American missionaries. They were arrested on Friday with a busload of 33 children they said were orphaned by the January 12th earthquake.
Surrounded by journalists, the missionaries left a police station where they have been detained, to go to a hearing in a local courthouse.
The accused missionaries deny they were engaged in child trafficking. They said they were just trying to help some of the thousands of orphans left destitute and abandoned by the quake.
Haitian officials said the detained Americans had no documents proving the children were orphans and no official permission to take them out of the country. So they could face kidnapping charges.
The situation became more complicated when authorities found that some of the children were not orphans.
Haitian police say some parents admitted to handing over their children to the American missionaries, hoping that they would get an education and a better life.
